If you have a garbage disposal, you know how easy and convenient it is to be able to throw a majority of your food waste down it and be done with your clean up. However, with having a garbage disposal you need to know what can and can not go down it.

If you wind up throwing items that should not be thrown, down the garbage disposal, you may have a costly repair on your hands. So, it is important to take care of it as much as possible.

Here are some of the items that should not be thrown done the garbage disposal no matter what.

  • Bones of any kind should stay out of the disposal. Even if they are small chicken wing bones, they might make it down the disposal after spinning around in circles for awhile. However, the bones will not clear the drains and you will have a blocked drain you now need to deal with.
  • Any kind of fruit pits and avocado pit should also not be thrown down the disposal, they just will not chop up, even with the rapid speed of the disposal.
  • Coffee grounds actually will chop up easily in the disposal, however they will begin to pool at the bottom of the disposal and will cause a slimy and clogged mess.
  • It might sound weird, but any kind of pasta should not be thrown down the disposal. Even though the pasta may have been fully cooked already, it will tend to get bigger over a period of time of sitting in water constantly, so avoid throwing down the disposal and your drains period. Along, with pasta, rice will do the same thing.
