Skimp and Spend
When considering a bathroom remodel, your first step is to set a budget – a realistic budget. Then you’ll need to determine on which areas of this remodel you’ll want to save money and which areas you’ll need to spend a bit more.
1. Flooring – As a plumber who has over 20 years of experience in custom home remodeling and building, I can tell you from experience the flooring is extremely important, but you can save money here as well. You’ll want to make sure you choose a material that is slip-resistant, holds up well against water, is not so pourus as to soak up and stain with water.
2. Cabinetry and Countertops – One again, this is an area where you actually can save money by either simply renovating the cabinets and countertops you already have, covering them, refacing them, or getting all new. Remember that with the cabinet doors, you will be opening and closing them every single day, so the material you use must be able to stand up to continued beatings.
3. Hardware and Paint – You might not realize how much of a difference some nice hardware and a new coat of pain will make in your newly remodeled Phoenix bathroom, but some of the simplest tweaks can truly make a big difference. This is another area where you don’t necessarily have to splurge.
4. Plumbing Fixtures – Ok, as a Phoenix and Gilbert plumber this is truly where I get excited about the bathroom remodel. Your new bathroom fixtures are going to be used every single day, probably many times throughout the day, so you’ll want to spend a bit more in this area. Consider a low-flow, energy-efficient toilet that will not only save you money in the long run, but here in Arizona it will also help out our environment.
When it comes to faucets, shower heads and everything in between, I always say “go big.” Get something that will last the test of time, that will continue to look beautiful over the years, and that will also save on your energy bills. You’ll want low-flow but powerful shower heads and faucets.
(And while we’re on the topic of a bathroom remodel, it might be around this time that you’ll want to start researching home water softening systems. No matter how much money you put into that bathroom remodel and those fancy and efficient plumbing fixtures, hard water will eat away at them over the years. Get soft water and help those fixtures last.)
Of course, you can do all of this DIY and hope that you’re doing everything not only up to code, but safe and in a manner that will make the remodel last. My advice – call C Slany Plumbing and have an experience Phoenix plumber come out to assist with the remodel.
